Taking Baby Pictures - Expert's Top Tips

Taking pictures of any subject has become a lot easier with cameras at every turn but taking perfect shots of your children and babies is not as easy as clicking away. To help you achieve semi professional baby photography, TBF has compiled some top tips from experts.

Come down to their level
You are much taller than the baby so to catch their perspective, bring yourself down to their eye level. If the baby can see you, there is a greater chance for eye contact, interaction, and expression can this could mean you are bound to get a good shot.

Time your shoots
Very young babies cannot pose for your shoots. Sorry. Its not going to happen! This is in itself a good thing but means you have to keep on the look out for those times in your baby’s life when he or she seems most settled and content. These are times when we’re guaranteed to get wide open eyes and even a giggle or two.

Consider your background
Avoid (where possible) having too much happening in the background when you take pictures. This includes any thing that can be a disstraction and take awy attention from your baby. Tidy up the couch, remove the empty bowl or your mobile phone from the table... you get the picture?

Use natural light
The best lighting for a photo shoot is always natures own. Its the same with taking baby pictures. Its less distracting and more gentle than any artificial lighting. The best light is natural light and the best natural light comes just after sunrise or just before sunset. Bright midday light will either produce shadows on your baby’s face or cause him to close his eyes or squint – neither result is what we want.

Take close-ups
The most personal shots with little or no distractions are close-ups. A shot of your little one's face will capture more detail and emotion and will have lovely results.
Don’t forget to take close ups of your baby's feet, hands, fingers as every little bit will make a great close up photo.

Take pictures regularly
Babies change every day, especially in the first few months, it’s exponential and quite amazing to watch. However unless you’re looking for the changes you can easily miss them so it’s it’s important to take shots regularly.

Finally, Keep Your Camera Close
Most very young babies are not at all predictable so to capture those moments when they do something new, cute, disgusting, funny or worth capturing, you need to capture it in a very short time frame. Without the camera handy you are bound to miss these moments as they are usually very short.
